New Orleans’s culture is a rich and varied amalgam of multiple influences from around the world, and it is here that African, Caribbean, and rhythm & blues meet to form the infectious sounds of Southern funk music. This documentary explores what funk music means to a wealth of luminaries and proponents, including Keith Richards–who extolls the virtues of all things New Orleans–Bonnie Raitt, Earl Palmer, Snooks Eaglin, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, and the Neville Brothers. Live concert footage is combined with engaging interviews, and archive footage that features Professor Longhair and Fats Domino. The climactic, explosive concert, held in New Orleans on April 27, 2004, features a lineup of over 80 artists playing a range of styles, including jazz, brass band, blues, and the music of Mardi Gras “Indians.” In another of the program’s highlights, Keith Richards covers Fats Domino’s “I’m Ready,” accompanied by Earl Palmer and Walter “Wolfman” Washington.

IMDB

Synopsis: Rwanda, a small country in the heart of Africa, was the scene in 1994 of the last genocide of the 20th century: in only 100 days, almost 1 million people were killed. By the end of that year, the UN established the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, with the aim of judging the perpetrators, amongst them priests, journalists, artists and political leaders. Argentine judge Inés Weinberg de Roca is the only representative from Latin America in this multicultural tribunal, which calls judges from all over the world. A documentalist team traveled to Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda to interview judges, prosecutors, defenders, accused and survivors, and to accompany judge Inés Weinberg de Roca in her first official visit to the country where the African Holocaust took place. The prints of the massacre are present in this documentary where the awesome beauty of Rwanda contrasts with this moving human story.

Anthology of Polish Animated Films (2009)-ed. Marcin Giżyck

February 3, 2010

Runtime: 222 minutes
Language: Polish (English subtitles)
Country: Poland
Color and Black-and-White

Description: “…These are sheer numbers and prizes that bear testimony to the past significance of Polish animation: 162 films exported in 1963 alone, 1974 proceeds from animated film exports higher than these from sales of feature films, dozens of highest prizes at most important festivals and competitions, Oscar for Zbigniew Rybczynski for “Tango”, and so on, and so forth. The present anthology is the first attempt to make at least a part of the extremely extensive output of Polish animators available to wider audiences. (…) The two DVDs which we present to cinema lovers, did not have enough room to contain all the outstanding Polish animated films of the last six decades, nor present all the makers worthy of attention. We do hope, however, that the selection is representative enough to let those viewers, who are not very well familiar with the history of Polish animation, get to know it better, while to its enthusiasts, it will bring back almost thirty of its gems.”

Gerard Reve (Jeroen Krabbé), an alcoholic, bisexual novelist, leaves Amsterdam to deliver a lecture at the Vlissingen Literary Society. There, he becomes sexually involved with its attractive treasurer, Christine Halslag (Renée Soutendijk), who is alternately described as a witch, black widow, Delilah and the Devil. The Virgin Mary appears to him in visions to show that he is targeted as her fourth victim. Mary says, “Anyone given a warning must listen to it.” Gerard listens and his life is spared. He passes on the warning to Herman, Christine’s other lover, who ignores it, thinking that Gerard is trying to scare him off so that he can have Christine for himself. The movie ends with Herman’s death, Christine’s selection of a fifth victim and Gerard’s future uncertain.

Salvatore takes his family, as well as his old mother, Fortunata (Aurora Quattrocchi). While on the ship to America, many men find the British Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg) attractive. For administrative reasons, Lucy wants to marry Salvatore on arrival on Ellis Island. He agrees; he understands that she is not in love with him yet, but expects that will come. Day Zero (2007) Bryan Gunnar Cole

Day Zero (2007) Bryan Gunnar Cole

Director: Bryan Gunnar Cole | Writer: Robert Malkani | Editor: Bill Pankow | Cast: Elijah Wood, Jon Bernthal, Chris Klein, Ginnifer Goodwin, Elisabeth Moss, Ally Sheedy, Sofia Vassilieva, Zoe Lister Jones, Amir Arison, James Avondolio, Beth Beyer | Genre: Drama | Cinematographer: Matt Clark | Runtime: 92 Min | Format: DvdRip, Color, NTSC, Avi | Language: English, with English & Spanish subtitles included in rar files (sub/idx) | Country: USA

Day Zero is a 2007 American film directed by Bryan Gunnar Cole and written by Robert Malkani. A stunning political piece that isn’t about politics. No matter what your thoughts on the current political climate is or what your feelings on the draft are, this is a film for every one to see. The drama is intense and by the end I was actively thinking about the film and the characters. This is a film that will make you start to think a little bit more about how someone in the real world would really react if they suddenly were told that they had to put everything that they had on hold in order to fight in another country.

IMDB

Synopsis: Three men come face to face with their concerns about war when they’re drafted in this independent drama set in the near future. As the United States becomes more deeply mired in wars around the world and the threat of major terrorist attacks looms large, the federal government decides to reinstate conscription, and three friends face conflicting emotions as they wait out their last few days before entering the Army under the new draft. George Rifkin (Chris Klein) is a lawyer who has been helping his wife, Molly (Ginnifer Goodwin), get through her recent cancer treatment; he would prefer to stay home with her as she recovers, but despite his legal know-how he can’t find a loophole out of his current dilemma. Aaron Feller (Elijah Wood) is a slight and sensitive writer who doesn’t feel physically or emotionally prepared to serve in the military, despite his sense of moral obligation, and he turns to a therapist, Dr. Reynolds (Ally Sheedy), to help him cope. And James Dixon (Jon Bernthal) is a cabbie who feels reasonably strong and confident about his future as a soldier until he meets Patricia (Elizabeth Moss), a college student who challenges his beliefs and assumptions about the war and each man’s place in it. Day Zero was the first feature film from veteran editor Bryan Gunnar Cole, and received its world premiere at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival.
