The Secret Policeman’s Ball (1979)

Cast: Peter Cook, John Cleese, Clive James, Pete Townshend, Rowan Atkinson,Michael Palin, John Williams, Sylvester Mccoy, Ken Campbell, David Rappaport, Terry Jones, Tom Robinson.

Out of all the Secret Policeman’s Balls, this one is the most entertaining and funniest. This is usually the one I watch because it has my favorite comedians all together in top form. Eleanor Bron is great in the “Dear God” sketch, with her rambling dialog being very entertaining. “Cheese Shop” wasn’t as good as the Python version, but you can’t really expect that….they pull it off very nicely, though. The “Pregnancy” sketch is a nice short one. That Eleanor Bron is really good.

Notable praise goes to Rowan Atkinson, though. Considering that this was even before “Not the Nine O’Clock News” first being broadcast, this must have been a real important night for him. His “Schoolmaster” sketch is a delight. Also, him in Dudley Moore’s shoes for the “End of the World” sketch makes it take off. For once, someone other than Peter Cook is the funniest part of a sketch! He also handled the “Four Yorkshiremen” sketch very well with other Pythons. Kudos for Rowan Atkinson; this is his breakthrough moment in comedy.

But you can’t watch this and say that Peter Cook didn’t steal the show because he quite simply steals every show! The “Interesting Facts” sketch really blew the whole thing open at the beginning. Cleese never laughs during a sketch, but Cook gets him to. Cook always leaves them in stitches. But, the real shining moment of the night is the “Entirely a Matter For You” sketch lampooning the Jeremy Thorpe case. If you don’t know about the case before watching it, do the research. It’ll actually make it funny. It’s actually one of the funniest sketches ever made. It’s sooooo perfect and Peter Cook is in top form during this. Just another reason of a million why Peter Cook was such a genius. You really don’t know comedy if you don’t know about Peter Cook.

France 2002
Director: Delphine Gleize
Cast: Chiara Mastroianni, Angela Molina, Lio, Lucia Sanchez, Esther Gorintin

CARNAGE is a stunning film – though from the outset it should be made clear that it is not a film for all audiences. For those who cringe at gore, those who are frustrated by nonlinear storyline, and those who feel uncomfortable with magical realism – beware. This is a two-hour plus journey that demands concentration and suspension of belief to glean all of the multi-layered meanings it holds.

Stylishly opening with the elegant dressing and preparation of a handsome young bullfighter discussing his incipient time in the ring with his father, the film moves into a the bull ring in Spain and while the young bullfighter is gored, a young girl watches in horror on a television in France. Thus the sequence of coincidences begins. The dead bull is dragged from the ring, butchered, and his various parts (meat to restaurants, horns to a taxidermist, testicles, eyes, etc) are sent to unrelated places in Spain, Belgium and France. Along the way we meet the child who observed the goring on television and discover she is epileptic and draws pictures where dogs are larger than humans (because her’s is!), an actress searching for her center, a therapy group bonding and yielding primal screams while nude in a pool, a taxidermist who lives with his mother (the wondrous Esther Gorintin of ‘Since Otar Left’) and his estranged anatomist brother married to a woman pregnant with quintuplets (neither brother speaks to their damaged father), and so many more. Each of these characters encounters one form or other of the dead bull as food, souvenirs, gifts, etc: each time the consequences of these coincidences add greatly to the story…

A movie about various characters in three countries and a dead bull? This could easily be one of those tedious, plotless, arty French films I hate so much. In fact, it isn’t. Carnages is an intriguing, well-made and sometimes funny movie, well worth seeing. The storyline centres around the remains of a dead bull, that one way or another turn up in the lives of the main characters, sometimes with dramatic consequences. This alone makes pleasant viewing for superficial moviegoers, but behind the main storyline are many layers the director invites us to explore. One of them is the parent-child relationship. One of the first scenes shows a bullfighter talking about his father, the movie ends with two brothers reunited with their long-lost father. One of them is father of quintuplets, the other lives with his mother. Another theme is the life-death contrast, and no doubt there are others I didn’t discover. Feel free to do so yourself. Despite these themes and the various interwoven storylines, the movie isn’t hard to view. There are many little jokes and funny situations. When one of the main characters orders eight pizza’s for three people, this seems ridiculous. Only later the viewer realizes his pregnant wife was expecting quintuplets at that moment. What makes the movie even more enjoyable are the beautiful shots and the outstanding acting. In this film a shot of a little girl watching a bullfight on TV is an exciting scene. That’s a difficult job to accomplish.

Avatar: Creating The World of Pandora [The Making of the Film] (2009) James Cameron

Avatar: Creating The World of Pandora [The Making of the Film]
(2009) James Cameron

Director: James Cameron | Writer: James Cameron | Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Cch Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang and Matt Gerald | Genre: Documentary, Short, Featurette | Runtime: 22 Min | Format: DvdRip, Color, NTSC, MKV | Language: English, no subs | Country: USA

See how James Cameron creates his latest epic, from the first draft written in 1995, to the extensive development and casting process, all the way through the massive digital effects work and editing process. It’s a fascinating look at how unorthodox methods had to be implemented to achieve the daunting task of bringing such a radically different film like Avatar to the big screen.

IMDB none

Synopsis: James Cameron’s long-awaited epic fantasy Avatar might not be Titanic, his last film, released twelve years ago, but it is definitely titanic in size and scope. “It’s got a big story – that’s where it starts,” said producer Jon Landau, who also produced Titanic and started as a unit production manager. “Jim created a story that called for a world that did not exist. The technology did not exist before Titanic. The tech hurdle was creating the closeup. In the center of our world, we have CGI (computer-generated imagery) characters – and movies are all about the closeup.” For these characters, created through a complex process beginning on stages at Playa Vista and ending up largely at Weta Digital in New Zealand, Cameron and his crew realized that the success of the movie rested on the believability of the creatures, the native inhabitants of the alien world, Pandora. “You don’t get involved in the motion of the world,” said Landau. “You get involved in the characters. We needed ‘emotive’ and ‘engaging.’ These are humanoid characters. They become the protagonists for which we follow the story.” One of the breakthroughs in Avatar was the advent of a new type of performance capture system in which live actors were translated into digital characters through a system in which cameras were attached to actors heads via a helmet device that would record the actors every facial movement. “Instead of going with what people did in the past, e-motion capture,” said Landau. “Instead of reflective markers, we used an image-based capture in a frame-by-frame basis. On the visual effects end, it’s intensive. But we created a paradigm for them to focus on the hard stuff.”

La Zona is a Mexican film by director Rodrigo Plá. He describes a failed break-in attempt in a gated community and the consequences for the thieves and the residents. The film was given the Venice Film Festival’s award for best debut feature in 2007.

IMDB

Synopsis: At a time when the growing chasm between the rich and the poor appears to be slowly tearing Mexico – and many other Latin countries – apart, first time filmmaker Rodrigo Plá highlights just how isolationism breeds fear in many wealthy communities. Alejandro (Daniel Tovar) lives with his father Daniel (Daniel Giménez Cacho) and his mother Mariana Maribel Verdú) in an isolated community known as La Zona. La Zona is home to the most privileged citizens in Mexico, but with all of the gates and closed circuit cameras it feels more like a million dollar prison than a typical neighborhood. Eventually, a group of disadvantaged teenagers manage to break into La Zona. As the members of the community scramble to protect their families at any cost, one of the teenaged burglars, a frightened boy named Miguel (Alan Chávez), seeks cover in the basement of Alejandro’s home as his friends scatter. Later, when Alejandro discovers the young fugitive, the privileged boy’s growing empathy for the petty thief and murder suspect leads him to question the values imposed on him by his father as well as the many other isolationists who have taught him to fear his fellow countrymen.

IMDB

Synopsis: It’s one of the greatest stories ever told. The legend of Helen of Troy has enchanted audiences for the last three thousand years. In May this year a Hollywood film staring Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom will be launched in Britain. But is there any reality to the myth? Horizon has unprecedented access to the scientist with the answers. Since 1988 Professor Manfred Korfmann has been excavating the site of Troy. He has never before spoken at this length. He has made amazing discoveries – how large the city was, how well it was defended and, crucially, that there was once a great battle there at precisely the time that experts believe the Trojan war occurred.

But who had attacked the city and why? Horizon then follows a trail of clues – the ancient tablets written by a lost civilisation, the sunken ship rich in treasure, and the magnificent golden masks and bronze swords of a warrior people. The film reaches its climax in a tunnel deep beneath Troy, where Korfmann has made a discovery that may reveal, once and for all, the truth behind the myth. The story that emerges is one of great passion – but not, it seems, about love.

Johnny Belinda (1948) – Jean Negulesco

Directed by: Jean Negulesco
Genres: Drama
Country: USA Language: English
Format: AVI, File Size: 837 MB, Duration: 01:38 min
Video: Codec: Xvid, Resolution: 576 x 432 (25.000 fps), Bitrate: 1104 Kbps
Audio 0#: MPEG-1 Layer 3, Bitrate: 80 Kbps (1 ch), Sampling Rate: 48.0 KHz

Cast: Jane Wyman, Lew Ayres, Charles Bickford, Agnes Moorehead, Stephen McNally

After years of dumb-blonde and best-friend roles, Jane Wyman proved her skills as a dramatic actress — and won an Academy Award in the bargain — in Johnny Belinda. Adapted from a stage play by Elmer Harris, the story takes place in Nova Scotia, where deaf-mute Belinda (Wyman) leads a lonely existence on the hardscrabble farm of her father Black Macdonald (Charles Bickford) and her aunt Aggie (Agnes Moorehead). Newly arrived doctor Robert Richardson (Lew Ayres) takes a special interest in Belinda, vowing to ease her road in life by teaching her sign language. Despite initial resistance from her father and aunt, Belinda quickly learns how to communicate with others, opening a whole, wonderful new world for her. But things take a sorry turn when local lout Locky (Stephan McNally) corners poor Belinda after a village dance and rapes her. If the ending seems a bit ambiguous, it is because director Jean Negulesco intended it that way, allowing the viewer to draw his or her own conclusion regarding Belinda’s future relationship with her mentor Dr. Richardson. Upon accepting her Oscar, Jane Wyman commented on the fact that she accomplished this feat through the simple expedient of “keeping my mouth shut.” But there is nothing simple or facile in Wyman’s astonishing performance as Belinda, which far outclasses the actresses who repeated the role in the two TV remakes. Also worthy of praise is the lush musical score by Max Steiner, one of his best post-Casablanca efforts. (allmovie.com by Hal Erickson)

Review:
Johnny Belinda features a superb performance from Jane Wyman in the title role and a well-crafted story without the overtly happy ending common to this type of “personal triumph” drama. Filmed in effective black-and-white by Ted D. McCord, the studio recreation of a Nova Scotia fishing village is convincing, while director Jean Negulesco underplays many scenes, allowing the performances to resonate with the material. Ironically, Negulesco was fired late in the production of the film, when studio execs saw that he was avoiding the sort of tear-jerking sentimentality that they had expected. Because it would have been too expensive to re-shoot the entire picture, the studio reluctantly released it pretty much as Negulesco had wanted. The result was Warner Bros.’ biggest hit of the year. This is another example of how films with strong, non-traditional women as the central character became more prominent in the post-WWII era. The film was nominated for a near-record twelve Academy Awards, though Wyman’s Best Actress Oscar was the only category in which it won. (allmovie.com by Richard Gilliam)

Jane Wyman won oscar Best Actress.

A Letter to Three Wives (1949) – Joseph L. Mankiewicz

A Letter to Three Wives (1949)
Image

Directed by: Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Genres: Drama, Mystery, Romance
Country: USA Language: English
Format: AVI, File Size: 697 MB, Duration: 01:43 min
Video: Codec: Xvid, Resolution: 576 x 416 (23.976 fps), Bitrate: 851 Kbps
Audio 0#: MPEG-1 Layer 3, Bitrate: 83 Kbps (1 ch), Sampling Rate: 48.0 KHz

Cast: Jeanne Crain, Linda Darnell, Ann Sothern, Kirk Douglas, Paul Douglas

Three wives, played by Jeanne Crain, Ann Sothern and Linda Darnell, are about to embark on a boat trip when each receives a letter, written by a mutual friend named Addie, informing her that Addie is about to run off with one of their husbands. In flashback, each wife wonders if it is her marriage that is in jeopardy. Deborah (Crain) recounts her fish-out-of-water relationship with her up-and-coming hubby (Jeffrey Lynn); businesswoman Rita (Sothern) asks herself if she’s been too rough on her professorial spouse (Kirk Douglas); and Lora May (Darnell), a girl from (literally) the wrong side of the tracks, questions the security of her marriage to a brash business executive (Paul Douglas). The voice of Addie, who is never seen, is provided by Celeste Holm. Thelma Ritter shows up in a hilarious unbilled bit as a slatternly domestic, while an equally uncredited Carl \”Alfalfa\” Switzer makes a quick entrance and exit as a bellhop. Written with perception and not a little witty condescension by director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, A Letter to Three Wives won two Oscars ,both for Mankiewicz. Based on a novel by John Klempner, the property was remade for television in 1985, with Ann Sothern back again in a supporting part. (allmovie.com by Hal Erickson)

Review:
The wickedly clever premise of A Letter to Three Wives is a brilliant jumping-off point for a clever and astute screenplay. The film’s three different but equally troubled marriages offer an insightful glimpse into the gender politics, rotting class distinctions, and social mores of America in the mid-20th century. Unlike many filmic depictions of women of this era, the three leads in A Letter to Three Wives are not stereotyped or pigeon-holed. Each one is independent and strong, despite nagging doubts about the strength of her marriage. Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s script goes right for the throat of middle-class suburban values via some very sympathetic characters; if the mix is occasionally uncomfortable (the characters are a bit too likeable to be skewered so harshly), the aim is straight and true. The stars play no small part in the film’s success, especially Ann Sothern’s poised performance as the ambitious writer for radio programs and Linda Darnell as the rough, self-doubting girl from the wrong side of the tracks. Visually, the film adds little to the art of cinema, but Mankiewicz’s writing is a wonder. The following year, he wrote and directed the legendary All About Eve, leading to an unprecedented Academy Award record: Mankiewicz won Best Director and Best Screenplay for both movies, in consecutive years. (allmovie.com by Dan Jardine)

Awards:
A Letter to Three Wives won 2 oscars: Best Director (Joseph L. Mankiewicz) and Best Screenplay (Joseph L. Mankiewicz). It was nominated for oscar Best Picture.
