It is a significant day for 80 year old Antonio. After an absence of many years, his estranged son is coming to visit. All must be perfect. Synopsis: This is a beautiful film from Argentinian writer/director Carlos Sorin and beautifully shot on location in the Patagonian countryside by cinematographer Julian Apezteguia. Antonio (Antonio Larreta) is an old man living on his old country estate with his two nurses (Maria del Carmen Jimenez) (Emilse Roldan) and has recently suffered a heart attack. He is bedridden and on an ICV and his country doctor wants him admitted to a hospital. Antonio’s son who is a world renowned pianist is coming from Spain to see his ailing father for possibly the last time. Antonio has had a dream about the baby sitter he had as a child and 80 years later he doesn’t know why he has had the dream or what it may mean. A piano tuner has been summoned by Antonio to tune the old family piano that hasn’t been played in decades in case his son wants to play it. He has also summoned up from the wine cellar a 40 year old bottle of champaign that he and his late wife have been saving for a special occasion. This film is sparse on dialog and very little happens in the film but it is such a poignant small film and almost like a theatrical play that you will find it enchanting.

This Colombian movie directed by Antiono Dorado “El Rey” was nominated to the Goya Awards for Best Foreign Movie. Interestingly, the movie “El Rey” mixes biographical fact with the urban legend that members of the Peace Corps opened the market for Colombia’s cocaine three decades ago. In the film, a Peace Corps worker named Harry works with El Rey to move cocaine to New York and other US cities. ‘El Rey” is probably the only film among the 50 in the running for this year’s foreign-language Oscar Academy Award that had its reels searched for cocaine as they left Bogota’s El Dorado airport, en route to France, where the film was edited. “There’s always suspicion if anything leaves Colombia,” says the film’s director, Antonio Dorado. “They figure there’s got to be something inside.”

Having police manhandling his reels wasn’t the only hurdle Dorado had to overcome, however. Colombia initially nominated “Maria Full of Grace,” a high-profile favorite among US critics, as its entry for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. But the choice ran up against a little-known Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences rule: Foreign-language films must be made largely by people from the country doing the nominating. “Maria” was written and directed by Joshua Marston, a US native. Colombia’s answer was to choose “El Rey.”

Desmundo is a 2003 Brazilian film by Alain Fresnot, based on a novel by Ana Miranda. The film is set in Brazil in 1570. The story of Orisbela, a young and religious woman who comes from Portugal to Brazil to marry Francisco de Albuquerque, a rude sugar-cane plantation owner, in 1570.

Synopsis: French-born Brazilian filmmaker Alain Fresnot directs the historical drama Desmundo. Set in 1570, the story follows a young orphan girl who was given to a Brazilian colonizer by the Queen of Portugal. Oribela (Simone Spoladore) is sent far away from home to be the wife of the sugar cane farmer Francisco de Albuquerque (Osmar Prado), who is much older than her. Although he loves her, Francisco is a slovenly man who lives in a strange, incestuous household with his mother and sister. Romeo and Juliet – a couple that has a very odd perception of their relationship. They decide to buy a loft situated in a run-down factory. Somenone already lives there. The deranged owner of the factory, and his buddy, the real-estate agent, have been living an exciting life of capturing and torturing young and innocent couples. Too bad Romeo and Juliet are everything but docile victims!

‘On Evil Grounds’ clearly shows, what is possible if you are a passionate filmmaker. Without large budget, Peter Koller made it to create an absolutely extraordinary movie, which contains new, funny and sometimes absurd ideas. The good cast leaves no doubt about that movie, especially Kari Rakkola in his role as a psychopathic but pitiable killer is just perfect.

I saw the movie and the director at the ‘Diagonale’ film festival in Graz and I was thrilled by such a great genre mix. Solid trash horror elements mixed with totally funny scenes make ‘On Evil Grounds’ a movie that you want to see again. Thumbs up for the young digital film-making community!

A nail-biting psychological thriller, that never lets you go. Synopsis: The movie is centered around Lori, a 16 year old girl who lives with her mother her mothers’ boyfriend, and Dan Komenko, an 18 year old boy who has killed his parents. Komenko frequently gets a visit from Cristofuoro, the detective who arrested Dan for the murder on his parents. Cristofuoro is convinced Komenko is a psychopath, and that he will kill again. After Dan is released from juvenile penitentiary, he goes to live with his aunt. His release causes some media attention, and Lori tries to seek out Dan at his home. Lori gets in the back of Dans car to seek shelter from rain and she falls asleep.
When he leaves for the weekend to meet another girl in an amusement park, Lori pops up from under a blanket while Dan is driving. The scare and near accident which follows cause a bit of a situation with the police, so Lori gets to move to the front seat. Reluctantly Dan allows Lori to come along with him. From time to time he still feels the urge to kill, but partly by keeping this under control, partly by chance, nobody gets hurt.
Cristofuoro tries to find Dan in order to trap him before he makes a major mistake. When Dan and Lori make a boat trip, Lori commits suicide by allowing herself to fall into the water while not being able to swim. Dan tries to save her without success. Cristofuoro arrests him. After Dan’s explanation he agrees that Dan did not kill Lori, but since Cristofuoro realizes that Dan is still dangerous anyway, he uses the opportunity to have him locked up again.
